Dressing Like a Grown Up

banana republic

A few years ago I enjoyed dressing up. Looking through my closet, remixing pieces…it was fun. I knew who I was and let my wardrobe reflect it. These days I stare – usually annoyed – at what’s there. Partially because I’m still about 12 pounds away from my pre-baby weight and so much of my closet still doesn’t fit and partially because I don’t identify with a lot of what’s there anymore and feel a little lost.

Maybe it’s because I’m 30 or because I have a baby and I’m a mom, or because I need to feel like I at least look like I’ve got it together, but when it comes to my style I’ve noticed myself wanting to look more grown up. Not like bad mom jeans and a mini-van grown up but like an effortless/cool/stylish grown up.

As I’ve gone re-introducing myself to the non-maternity clothes shopping world, I find myself gravitating towards more streamlined, classic pieces. I used to go out and rather than buy the item I really wanted, I’d get whatever was on sale because it was cheaper. Now, rather than get three pieces I only kinda’ sorta’ want, I’ll hold out for that one piece I really want {while still maintaining within my budget}…pieces I know will fit in seamlessly with the rest of my wardrobe and will easily work with several items in my closet.

My taste in accessories has also evolved. Previously a lover of statement pieces, I now find that simple, understated pieces are all I wear. And like with my wardrobe, I’d now rather have a few great pieces that will last a lifetime over countless costume items that I’ll leave behind with each passing trend and season.

Because I can’t simply head out and completely redo my wardrobe, I’m making a shopping list to ensure I stay focused on getting those key pieces. Here are just a few of the items topping my list — the classic, foundation pieces upon which I can build that grown up wardrobe.

shopping list

pumps | blouse | rings striped top bangle high waisted jeans | bucket bag trench coat | flats

Pumps: The most comfortable {and stylish} pumps I’ve ever owned were a Charles David pair in red I found at Marshall’s many years ago. Though I’ve long since parted with those, I’ve always been on the hunt for a similar pair. These polka dot ones are a fun twist on this classic shoe.

Blouse: I love a good menswear look, and this has long been one of my favorite style blouses to achieve that look {not to be confused with this style}. Though this particular iteration is a bit {and by a bit, I mean A LOT} out of my budget, I’m hoping to find something similar.

Delicate jewelry: These simple, understated pieces go with absolutely everything and are unfussy {a must, now with baby here}.

Striped top: Doing the whole casual but not bummy thing always proves to be a challenge for me. Always a fan of stripes, this structured top seems to make it a lot easier.

High waisted jeans: A modern twist on  a vintage style, this high waisted pair is an instant update to denim.

Bucket bag: A go-everywhere bucket bag in a sleek design and neutral color will easily go from work to weekend and back again.

Trench coat: While wearing a full length trench coat feels a little too New York to wear in Miami, this shorter version is just right for our unpredictable weather.

Flats: A pair that is equal parts chic and comfortable and every bit as stylish as heels.

Birds of a Feather

It seems like flamingos are where it’s at for summer 2015, but unlike other trends, this fun print isn’t limited to adults. Little ones can also sport this rosy-hued bird. Here are just some of the adorable flamingo-inspired items currently topping my “oh this would be so cute for my Little Caroline” list.

Summer Dresses Under $100

The Miami heat is in full force which means I’ve officially retired my jeans until fall. Every summer I find a go-to dress that can be easily dressed down for running errands or dressed up a bit for date night with the Mr. or brunch with friends {I wore this one a lot last year}. Though I’ve yet to find the dress for 2015, here are just a few options catching my eye…and they’re all under $100!

Put Some Spring in Your Step {at any budget}

Happy first day of Spring! While there are no defined seasons here in Miami, other than HOT and HOTTER, I like to change up my wardrobe throughout the year to pretend. What better way to give your look a fun, spring update than with some great floral pumps? They’re quite versatile and can be perfectly paired with a pencil skirt for work or with your favorite denim for date night {and if you’re like me, with your favorite striped top}. Here are a few at every price point.

How are you updating your wardrobe for spring?

long hair // short hair

My hair is the longest it’s been in years…which means I’ve started daydreaming of shorter ‘dos. {Why is it that as soon as my hair reaches great lengths – the reason I’ve been growing it out for years – the first thing I want to do is cut it?!} So I’ve been cyber-stalking short cuts on Instagram + Pinterest in hopes of coming to a final decision in my will I? or won’t I? debate. Here are a few that I’m particularly keen on, and you can check out my Short Hair Pinterest Board for more.

Quirky Clutches & Cross-body Bags

ohheybeck_clutches_crossbody

While you can typically find me with a mid-sized or large bag, I love a cute, quirky clutch or cross body bag (as seen here, here & here). Though small, they can make a big impact on any outfit. Here are a few that have recently caught my eye…all adorable and perfect for spring!

  1. Charlotte Olympia Taquera Suede-trimmed Embellished Raffia Clutch
  2. Kate Spade Spring Forward Flowerpot Crossbody
  3. BCBG Max Azria Horse Cross-body Bag
  4. Kate Spade Night Creature Coin Purse (on sale!)
  5. Loeffler Randall Gem Clutch (not quite quirky, but I loved it so much I decided to include it anyway)
  6. Marc Jacobs Big Heart Zip Clutch
  7. Kate Spade Chinese New Year Sheep Clutch (my favorite!)

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

After seeing the Glass Slipper Sweater from the new LC Lauren Conrad Cinderella Collection @ Kohl’s (loving this skirt too), I fell in love with that shade of blue and realized I don’t actually own anything that color. It feels so fresh and crisp for spring, and I’d love to do a full monochromatic look or add just a pop of it to an outfit.

My new found love inspired this quick round-up {I think #s 1, 4,5 & 11 are probably my favorite}. Already on my blue list were the Coach x Baseman bag + dress (which also comes as a top) from this post.

Doppelgänger Duds: Embellished Nude Leather Sandals

I’m always on the hunt for a bargain and am thrilled when I find a less expensive version of something I like (as seen here, here & here). With spring and summer just around the corner – and because let’s face it, in Miami you can wear sandals pretty much year-round – I’ve had my eye out for THE sandals. You know, the ones that go with everything, that you end up wearing constantly…Every summer I have that one pair.

I’m a fan of Sam Edelman and thought the pair below was cute but was pleasantly surprised to find a similar style by ASOS that I like even better. I like that they have a more feminine feel and can already picture wearing them with everything from light, airy dresses on the weekends to a crisp blazer and denim for the office. The best part? They’re about half the price of the S.E. pair!

Three cheers for bargain shopping!

Pretty Pastels {Handbag Edition}

With spring’s official start about a month away, I’m really craving some pastels – particularly in the handbag department. They add such a breath of fresh air to any outfit and are surprisingly versatile. Here are some of my favorites, with the Henri Bendel backpack and the Rebecca Minkoff quilted number topping my list!ohheybeck_pastel bags
