Dressing Like a Grown Up

banana republic

A few years ago I enjoyed dressing up. Looking through my closet, remixing pieces…it was fun. I knew who I was and let my wardrobe reflect it. These days I stare – usually annoyed – at what’s there. Partially because I’m still about 12 pounds away from my pre-baby weight and so much of my closet still doesn’t fit and partially because I don’t identify with a lot of what’s there anymore and feel a little lost.

Maybe it’s because I’m 30 or because I have a baby and I’m a mom, or because I need to feel like I at least look like I’ve got it together, but when it comes to my style I’ve noticed myself wanting to look more grown up. Not like bad mom jeans and a mini-van grown up but like an effortless/cool/stylish grown up.

As I’ve gone re-introducing myself to the non-maternity clothes shopping world, I find myself gravitating towards more streamlined, classic pieces. I used to go out and rather than buy the item I really wanted, I’d get whatever was on sale because it was cheaper. Now, rather than get three pieces I only kinda’ sorta’ want, I’ll hold out for that one piece I really want {while still maintaining within my budget}…pieces I know will fit in seamlessly with the rest of my wardrobe and will easily work with several items in my closet.

My taste in accessories has also evolved. Previously a lover of statement pieces, I now find that simple, understated pieces are all I wear. And like with my wardrobe, I’d now rather have a few great pieces that will last a lifetime over countless costume items that I’ll leave behind with each passing trend and season.

Because I can’t simply head out and completely redo my wardrobe, I’m making a shopping list to ensure I stay focused on getting those key pieces. Here are just a few of the items topping my list — the classic, foundation pieces upon which I can build that grown up wardrobe.

shopping list

pumps | blouse | rings striped top bangle high waisted jeans | bucket bag trench coat | flats

Pumps: The most comfortable {and stylish} pumps I’ve ever owned were a Charles David pair in red I found at Marshall’s many years ago. Though I’ve long since parted with those, I’ve always been on the hunt for a similar pair. These polka dot ones are a fun twist on this classic shoe.

Blouse: I love a good menswear look, and this has long been one of my favorite style blouses to achieve that look {not to be confused with this style}. Though this particular iteration is a bit {and by a bit, I mean A LOT} out of my budget, I’m hoping to find something similar.

Delicate jewelry: These simple, understated pieces go with absolutely everything and are unfussy {a must, now with baby here}.

Striped top: Doing the whole casual but not bummy thing always proves to be a challenge for me. Always a fan of stripes, this structured top seems to make it a lot easier.

High waisted jeans: A modern twist on  a vintage style, this high waisted pair is an instant update to denim.

Bucket bag: A go-everywhere bucket bag in a sleek design and neutral color will easily go from work to weekend and back again.

Trench coat: While wearing a full length trench coat feels a little too New York to wear in Miami, this shorter version is just right for our unpredictable weather.

Flats: A pair that is equal parts chic and comfortable and every bit as stylish as heels.

Pretty Pastels {Handbag Edition}

With spring’s official start about a month away, I’m really craving some pastels – particularly in the handbag department. They add such a breath of fresh air to any outfit and are surprisingly versatile. Here are some of my favorites, with the Henri Bendel backpack and the Rebecca Minkoff quilted number topping my list!ohheybeck_pastel bags

DOPPELGÄNGER DUDS: LEOPARD PRINT ESPADRILLES

Oh, hey! I hope you had a great weekend!

Today’s post is dedicated to summer-shoe favorite: espadrilles (and in leopard print, no less!).

I fell in love with the Valentino Cavallino Rockstud Leopard Espadrilles as soon as I saw them, but with Valentino style, comes a Valentino price tag. Always one to look for a bargain, I decided to find a cheaper and hopefully still stylish version. While the Aldo Zanca shoe is missing that extra something, its price would allow me to get them and still have enough money for our mortgage!

Would you save or splurge?

DOPPELGÄNGER DUDS: LEOPARD PRINT SNEAKERS

This edition of Doppelgänger Duds was inspired by Steve Madden’s ‘Ecentric’ sneaker (which I’d added to my wish list nearly two months ago). I like a bargain and $100 for sneakers is, well, not a bargain. So I’ve been on the hunt for a similar – but more budget-friendly pair – and finally found some at Nordstrom Rack for $29.97 (woot woot)! Sure, the pony hair of the Steve Maddens reads a bit more lux than the canvas of the ‘Argo’ sneaker by Report, but if it means paying 70% MORE, it’s a luxury I will just have to forgo.  Besides, the ‘Argos’ are comfortable + also come in an equally-stylish faux leather black croc. (Tip: If you’re interested in getting these be sure to shop around as some websites/stores have them at their original price of $50. But even at that price, you can afford to get both and still pay the same or less than you would for the one Steve Madden pair!)

{Stylish} Backpacks for Every Budget

No longer the utilitarian bags of the past, backpacks have evolved and are now an elevated, stylish and versatile accessory. There are so many great options, I’m wondering why there isn’t one already sitting in my closet (though as seen in this post, they are currently on my wish list). Wether you’ve got $30 or $3,000 to spend, you’re sure to find a backpack to fit your aesthetic and budget. Here are some neutral-hued options in various styles and prices.

Easter Dresses for Every Budget

As a little girl, my Mom always got me a new dress for Easter, and it was always a day where we’d get extra dressed up for church (I’m talking hat + gloves, people). A couple decades later, I still go straight to pretty pastels and florals when planning an Easter outfit. With this holiday just days away, I thought I’d share some lovely Easter dresses at every price, for every budget. ohheybeck_easterdressesunder25

Tuesday Target Finds

I live within walking distance of a Target, which is a gift and a curse all at the same time. Mainly because I go in for toilet paper (can I get woot woot for Angel Soft?) and walk out with a previously un-budgeted outfit, beauty supplies and/or enough decor for a home makeover. Despite the temptations to buy a bunch of stuff I don’t need, it’s really one of my favorite places to go. Sometimes I just go in to wander aimlessly. It’s quite the stress-reliever, no?

They always have really cute things at really good prices, and it seems like every time I go I find something(s) new (again, gift + curse). People are always surprised when they ask me where my outfit is from, and I say “Target.” I constantly find all kinds of cute pieces, even ones you wouldn’t expect to find at a store that also sells groceries and kitty litter. Case in point: a great tuxedo style vest and sequin skirt. Though I didn’t find said skirt in my size (boo!), I love how friend and fellow blogger Stephanie styled it over here.

Anyway, here are a few fun things I spotted this week. Though I resisted purchasing any of them (another boo!), I thought I’d share anyways, because why not?

IMG_8255Adorable mechanical pencils in the dollar section: completely unnecessary but so cute and dainty with gold patterns!

IMG_8256This tee is all my favorite things in a casual top: stripes, neon, 3/4 sleeves and a boatneck-ish neckline. Oh, and it’s just $12.

IMG_8258Rose gold kitchen accessories! I wasn’t joking when I said I love rose gold in this post.

IMG_8257A graphic dress with a simple silhouette, perfect for 9-5 (AND it has pockets! Because, obviously dresses are better with pockets, am I right?).

Are you a big Target fan? What’s been your favorite Target find? Let me know in the comments below! I need my husband to see I’m not the only Target-aholic.

Doppelgänger Duds: WHITE VEST

Whether on a tight budget or not, I love a good bargain. Despite what my husband may think, I don’t like spending too much money on any one item and breaking the bank for the sake of my wardrobe. So I was excited to find this vest while shopping at Target the other day. It’s versatile and adds polish to any look – and for the price I thought, Why not? It resembles one I’d admired by BCBG but for a fraction of the cost!

Is the design, fabric and structure equal? I don’t know. Probably not. But this is, to me, a trend piece that I don’t foresee wearing years from now, so who cares? If I like it and it gives me the boost of confidence a good outfit should, I don’t mind whose name is on the label or where I purchased it. Besides think of the other great items you can buy now that you’ve saved $220! 😉

Have you found any good bargains lately?

Beck the Bargain Hunter Sale Alert: J.Crew

When I say I love J.Crew, I don’t mean I love J.Crew; I mean I LOOOOOVE J.Crew. Because I’m a firm believer in not paying full price (ever!) I want to be sure my fellow J.Crew lovers know about their summer sale going on now through Sunday, June 16. They have an additional 30% off all sale items. They offer that additional discount fairly often, so I wasn’t surprised when I saw the signs in-store. What did surprise me was how low most of the prices were even before the extra 30. I spent under $120 on items that would’ve cost over $500 were it not for the sale.

jcrew

  1. Bouclé Jacket in Indigo Colorblock – original price $138; I paid $20.99
  2. Mari Sandal in Shocking Pink – original price $228; I paid $69.99
  3. Convertible Jewel-Collar Linen Sweater in Marled Natural – orignal price $148; I paid $27.99

Beck the Bargain Hunter tips to ensure you find the best deal:

  • Good things come to those who wait. I admit that getting a good bargain takes patience {I’d been stalking #1 for over a month}, but I always find it’s well worth the wait! I saved nearly for $400 on these three items alone.
  • Do your homework. Every item I’ve looked up is much more expensive online (ex. #2 is $179.99 online) so try your local J.Crew store first. However, if you love an item and it’s only in-stock online, they’re offering $5 shipping during the sale.
  • All stores are not created equal. Here in South Florida we have several locations: Aventura Mall, Dadeland Mall, Lincoln Road and Village of Merrick Park. I did my shopping at the Merrick location and found a better selection (though Dadeland did have jeans for $19.99 – 30%!). The Lincoln Road location on the other hand never has sales. Ever.
  • Go the extra mile. The Merrick location didn’t have the sweater (#3 above) in my size. So like any obsessive-compulsive I-just-have-to-have-it shopper, I got on the phone calling other locations trying to track it down. The Aventura location was the only one to still have it in my size. J.Crew customer service agreed to ship it to me as that drive is too far for me to make during the week, but they wanted to charge me the online price of $99.99. I mentioned the $39.99 sticker price at the store and after a quick confirmation with a store associate over the phone, J.Crew customer service agreed to not only ship it to me but also to honor the in-store price!

Now that you know about the sale and have some shopping tips, scope it out for yourself and be sure to send me a Tweet, tag me on Instagram or comment on this post with your bargain finds!
