Dressing Like a Grown Up

banana republic

A few years ago I enjoyed dressing up. Looking through my closet, remixing pieces…it was fun. I knew who I was and let my wardrobe reflect it. These days I stare – usually annoyed – at what’s there. Partially because I’m still about 12 pounds away from my pre-baby weight and so much of my closet still doesn’t fit and partially because I don’t identify with a lot of what’s there anymore and feel a little lost.

Maybe it’s because I’m 30 or because I have a baby and I’m a mom, or because I need to feel like I at least look like I’ve got it together, but when it comes to my style I’ve noticed myself wanting to look more grown up. Not like bad mom jeans and a mini-van grown up but like an effortless/cool/stylish grown up.

As I’ve gone re-introducing myself to the non-maternity clothes shopping world, I find myself gravitating towards more streamlined, classic pieces. I used to go out and rather than buy the item I really wanted, I’d get whatever was on sale because it was cheaper. Now, rather than get three pieces I only kinda’ sorta’ want, I’ll hold out for that one piece I really want {while still maintaining within my budget}…pieces I know will fit in seamlessly with the rest of my wardrobe and will easily work with several items in my closet.

My taste in accessories has also evolved. Previously a lover of statement pieces, I now find that simple, understated pieces are all I wear. And like with my wardrobe, I’d now rather have a few great pieces that will last a lifetime over countless costume items that I’ll leave behind with each passing trend and season.

Because I can’t simply head out and completely redo my wardrobe, I’m making a shopping list to ensure I stay focused on getting those key pieces. Here are just a few of the items topping my list — the classic, foundation pieces upon which I can build that grown up wardrobe.

shopping list

pumps | blouse | rings striped top bangle high waisted jeans | bucket bag trench coat | flats

Pumps: The most comfortable {and stylish} pumps I’ve ever owned were a Charles David pair in red I found at Marshall’s many years ago. Though I’ve long since parted with those, I’ve always been on the hunt for a similar pair. These polka dot ones are a fun twist on this classic shoe.

Blouse: I love a good menswear look, and this has long been one of my favorite style blouses to achieve that look {not to be confused with this style}. Though this particular iteration is a bit {and by a bit, I mean A LOT} out of my budget, I’m hoping to find something similar.

Delicate jewelry: These simple, understated pieces go with absolutely everything and are unfussy {a must, now with baby here}.

Striped top: Doing the whole casual but not bummy thing always proves to be a challenge for me. Always a fan of stripes, this structured top seems to make it a lot easier.

High waisted jeans: A modern twist on  a vintage style, this high waisted pair is an instant update to denim.

Bucket bag: A go-everywhere bucket bag in a sleek design and neutral color will easily go from work to weekend and back again.

Trench coat: While wearing a full length trench coat feels a little too New York to wear in Miami, this shorter version is just right for our unpredictable weather.

Flats: A pair that is equal parts chic and comfortable and every bit as stylish as heels.

{New Mom} Mother’s Day Gift Guide

After several weeks away from the computer, I’m back on the blog. I’ve been enjoying time with the newest addition to our family… our sweet Caroline Rae. She surprised us and arrived about 2 & 1/2 weeks ahead of her due date. She was born weighing 7lbs 1oz, measuring 19″ long and with a full head of hair. All bias aside, she’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. I love her so much it hurts. I can feel my heart breaking into a million tiny pieces every time I look at her. More on her in future posts {you can sneak a few peeks of her on Instagram}. For now, here’s a Mother’s Day Gift Guide for new moms.

mothersday

  1. Michael Kors Slim Runway Watch | Whether you’re keeping track of feedings, diaper changes or sleep patterns, it’s crazy how often you need to be aware of what time it is as a new mom. Might as well do it in style!
  2. KRZA by Krystle Mommy & Me Tie Side Headband in Leopard Print | How cute are these headbands? I actually already ordered a set for Caroline and me, and I can’t wait to receive them and try them on!
  3. Catbird Heart Stack Ring {personalized!} | I’m a big fan of Catbird jewelry, and these are no exception. I love the idea of wearing Caroline’s initials or middle name. The most sentimental gift on this list, these are a great way for any mom to represent her kiddos.
  4. Kate Spade Eat Cake for Breakfast Mug | With late nights and early morning feedings part of my new routine, I’ve found that a cup of coffee as the sun is coming up – and as I watch my little one drift off into blissful milk-induced sleep – has become an especially sacred part of my day. This mug just makes it that much better.
  5. Coach Campus Backpack | Technically this is a men’s item, but who cares?! If you’re like me, once you go back to work, you’re going to have to take a breast pump, bottles, along with all the other items you’d normally carry, like maybe a wallet, notebook, laptop, make up, etc. This bag has a good size, is easy to carry and looks so stylish! {I know they sell pumps already set up with a bag, but this is way better looking!}
  6. Blow Outs | Treat the mom{s} in your life to a good hair day. It’s a quick way for her to see a glimpse of her old self again. It feels good as a new mom to have that hour to yourself and walk out with pretty hair that doesn’t have spit-up in it…yet. If you live in Miami, you can get check out Blow N Dry Lounge or HSI Professional Hair Bar. Both offer single blow outs or package deals. I’ve been to Blow N Dry twice and have loved my hair {thanks to Milagros and Paola}. Although I haven’t tried HSI, I’ve heard good things about them too.
  7. Steve Madden BGemmaa Bucket Bag | There’s not really a mommy-related reason to this bag. It just looks good, which is as good a reason as any for a new mom to own it!

So tell me, what are you getting for the mom in your life? …or if you’re a new mom too, what’s on your wish list?

Pretty Pastels {Handbag Edition}

With spring’s official start about a month away, I’m really craving some pastels – particularly in the handbag department. They add such a breath of fresh air to any outfit and are surprisingly versatile. Here are some of my favorites, with the Henri Bendel backpack and the Rebecca Minkoff quilted number topping my list!ohheybeck_pastel bags

Hearts + Kisses

As I mentioned in this post, we’re not big on actually celebrating Valentine’s Day at our house…packed restaurants, overpriced menus, etc. are not our thing. I do, however, enjoy reveling in the cheesiness of it and will gladly reflect that in my outfit. Here are some of my favorite love-inspired items of the moment.

DOPPELGÄNGER DUDS: LEOPARD PRINT ESPADRILLES

Oh, hey! I hope you had a great weekend!

Today’s post is dedicated to summer-shoe favorite: espadrilles (and in leopard print, no less!).

I fell in love with the Valentino Cavallino Rockstud Leopard Espadrilles as soon as I saw them, but with Valentino style, comes a Valentino price tag. Always one to look for a bargain, I decided to find a cheaper and hopefully still stylish version. While the Aldo Zanca shoe is missing that extra something, its price would allow me to get them and still have enough money for our mortgage!

DOPPELGÄNGER DUDS: LEOPARD PRINT SNEAKERS

This edition of Doppelgänger Duds was inspired by Steve Madden’s ‘Ecentric’ sneaker (which I’d added to my wish list nearly two months ago). I like a bargain and $100 for sneakers is, well, not a bargain. So I’ve been on the hunt for a similar – but more budget-friendly pair – and finally found some at Nordstrom Rack for $29.97 (woot woot)! Sure, the pony hair of the Steve Maddens reads a bit more lux than the canvas of the ‘Argo’ sneaker by Report, but if it means paying 70% MORE, it’s a luxury I will just have to forgo.  Besides, the ‘Argos’ are comfortable + also come in an equally-stylish faux leather black croc. (Tip: If you’re interested in getting these be sure to shop around as some websites/stores have them at their original price of $50. But even at that price, you can afford to get both and still pay the same or less than you would for the one Steve Madden pair!)

{Stylish} Backpacks for Every Budget

No longer the utilitarian bags of the past, backpacks have evolved and are now an elevated, stylish and versatile accessory. There are so many great options, I’m wondering why there isn’t one already sitting in my closet (though as seen in this post, they are currently on my wish list). Wether you’ve got $30 or $3,000 to spend, you’re sure to find a backpack to fit your aesthetic and budget. Here are some neutral-hued options in various styles and prices.

P.S. Speaking of Easter, if you live in Miami I invite you to join me at Christ Journey Church for our Easter Celebration to really enjoy the reason behind the holiday! We’ll  be kicking off the series I Like Jesus, but Can’t Stand Christians. I hope to see you there!

Midi Rings

Midi rings are nothing new. I’ve always loved them and had some for years, but it wasn’t until recently that I found what I’d really been looking for: delicate & dainty midi rings that look as cute alone as they do paired together…for a good price (though I LOOOVE the ones by Catbird, I haven’t been able to bring myself to spend so much on one teeny tiny ring). I picked up this set at Nordstrom for just $8. It brought a 3rd ring with a heart – equally dainty, possibly even cuter – which I gave to my sister. Now if only they’d make these in rose gold!!

Here are just some of the many ways you can wear them: (please forgive my chipped polish)20140409-084320.jpg
