Dressing Like a Grown Up

banana republic

A few years ago I enjoyed dressing up. Looking through my closet, remixing pieces…it was fun. I knew who I was and let my wardrobe reflect it. These days I stare – usually annoyed – at what’s there. Partially because I’m still about 12 pounds away from my pre-baby weight and so much of my closet still doesn’t fit and partially because I don’t identify with a lot of what’s there anymore and feel a little lost.

Maybe it’s because I’m 30 or because I have a baby and I’m a mom, or because I need to feel like I at least look like I’ve got it together, but when it comes to my style I’ve noticed myself wanting to look more grown up. Not like bad mom jeans and a mini-van grown up but like an effortless/cool/stylish grown up.

As I’ve gone re-introducing myself to the non-maternity clothes shopping world, I find myself gravitating towards more streamlined, classic pieces. I used to go out and rather than buy the item I really wanted, I’d get whatever was on sale because it was cheaper. Now, rather than get three pieces I only kinda’ sorta’ want, I’ll hold out for that one piece I really want {while still maintaining within my budget}…pieces I know will fit in seamlessly with the rest of my wardrobe and will easily work with several items in my closet.

My taste in accessories has also evolved. Previously a lover of statement pieces, I now find that simple, understated pieces are all I wear. And like with my wardrobe, I’d now rather have a few great pieces that will last a lifetime over countless costume items that I’ll leave behind with each passing trend and season.

Because I can’t simply head out and completely redo my wardrobe, I’m making a shopping list to ensure I stay focused on getting those key pieces. Here are just a few of the items topping my list — the classic, foundation pieces upon which I can build that grown up wardrobe.

shopping list

pumps | blouse | rings striped top bangle high waisted jeans | bucket bag trench coat | flats

Pumps: The most comfortable {and stylish} pumps I’ve ever owned were a Charles David pair in red I found at Marshall’s many years ago. Though I’ve long since parted with those, I’ve always been on the hunt for a similar pair. These polka dot ones are a fun twist on this classic shoe.

Blouse: I love a good menswear look, and this has long been one of my favorite style blouses to achieve that look {not to be confused with this style}. Though this particular iteration is a bit {and by a bit, I mean A LOT} out of my budget, I’m hoping to find something similar.

Delicate jewelry: These simple, understated pieces go with absolutely everything and are unfussy {a must, now with baby here}.

Striped top: Doing the whole casual but not bummy thing always proves to be a challenge for me. Always a fan of stripes, this structured top seems to make it a lot easier.

High waisted jeans: A modern twist on  a vintage style, this high waisted pair is an instant update to denim.

Bucket bag: A go-everywhere bucket bag in a sleek design and neutral color will easily go from work to weekend and back again.

Trench coat: While wearing a full length trench coat feels a little too New York to wear in Miami, this shorter version is just right for our unpredictable weather.

Flats: A pair that is equal parts chic and comfortable and every bit as stylish as heels.

Ear Jackets

When it comes to jewelry + accessories, earrings are not my thing. I tend to wear the same couple pairs of studs with everything and am more into other pieces…particularly rings. Lately, however, there is a trend making me rethink my routine: ear jackets. It all started with a pair I saw at LOFT late last year – which my sister was sweet enough to give me for Christmas (see them here) – and while the name makes me roll my eyes a little, I do think they make a fun statement, especially when paired with a quick top knot and bright lipstick.

Midi Skirt{s}

Though midi pieces are nothing new, it wasn’t until I purchased this dress (which I was thrilled to find SUPER on sale), that I fell in love with that length. I find the skirts to be particularly versatile. Whether you’re dressing them up for work or date night, or simply throwing one on with flats and a tee to run errands, they’re a great piece to have in your wardrobe. Here are a few of my favorite midi skirt finds.

Eyelet

Always a go-to for summers past, when I think of eyelet, I think of overly-girly skirts or dresses (in white, of course). Once I hit my 20’s, I grew a distaste for this look, but after falling in love with this dress, I’m starting to see it in a new light. After some online window-shopping, I’ve found some fun silhouettes and colors that I love.

Here are just a few of the items making me think I need to give eyelet another chance!

Spring 2014 Trend: B & W

In honor of today being the first day of spring, I thought we could talk about one of my favorite spring trends: BLACK & WHITE.

Though there’s nothing new about pairing black and white, this season adds a new twist on the otherwise classic look. It’s all about mixing prints.  I love the stark contrast of these prints/colors juxtaposed with the pastels and florals typically associated with spring. The best part about this trend? It easily translates into an outfit for any part of your day. Here are just a few examples.

Overalls have not always been considered stylish, but recently they’re everywhere. It’s fun to see them get a modern spin! Here are a few styling tips on how to avoid looking like a toddler – or like you’re on your way to milk a cow or two…

  • Start with a body-conscious silhouette. Too baggy could ready sloppy and too tight…well, that just never looks good.
  • Roll them up  bit at the bottom (as seen on this pair of J.Crew denim).
  • Pair with a simple tee or blouse and top with a blazer over your shoulders. I love mixing prints so I chose stripes + floral.
  • Keep accessories light/clean.
  • Add a clutch and heels as the finishing touches. They’ll instantly give you a more sleek and sophisticated look. They can be swapped out for a small cross body bag + oxfords/ loafers if you’re looking for a more casual feel.

What are your thoughts on the trend? Would you wear them? Use the photos below as inspiration!

Everything’s Coming up Rose Gold

I love rose gold. Whether for home decor, accessories or make-up, it’s definitely my favorite of the metals (which you may have noticed on my Instagram). The rose hue just seems so feminine and dainty. I have my own (much smaller) collection of rose gold items and look forward to adding to it!

Are you a fan too?  Tag me in a photo of your favorite rose gold item(s) on Instagram #ohheybeck – I’d love to see!

I’ve got some fun posts lined up for next so be sure to check back in. Until then, have a wonderful weekend!
